Try zone cleaning this spring, instead of typical spring cleaning. Deep, annual spring cleaning can be an overwhelming, exhausting event. And it doesn’t have to be! Like every big task in life, just break it into smaller, more manageable pieces to make it easier. That’s zone cleaning!

Zone Cleaning Explained

Instead of all at once, zone cleaning advocates breaking your home into four to six “zones” that are specific and most importantly, manageable to get done in about 30 minutes or less. This method actually helps you “deep clean” your house about once a month, because you’re only doing one area per week in a short burst.

Dividing Your Home Into Zones

A typical way to divide up a home might be:

• Kitchen

• Main bathroom and one other small room

• Master bedroom and bathroom suite

• Living room and home office

• Group of kid’s bedrooms

• Entryway and dining room

Tips for Successful Zone Cleaning Efforts

Each week, stay focused on only that week’s one area. Make a checklist of what to do in each zone that is specific to that area such as declutter, vacuum, dust, organize, clean windows or countertops. Be as broad or specific as you need. Make sure you have all the cleaning products and gear that will help you get it done.

If you have bonus time to spend on a zone, go deeper in that area. Reorg a closet, clean out the fridge, organize a dresser drawer or toy box.
