Organizing a kid for college seems like an overwhelming task, until you break it down into smaller to-do lists. When you are moving a kid out of your home and into a dorm or apartment for college, the most important guideline to remember is minimalism.

Start with a good checklist of all the items that the dorm itself recommends that a student bring with them. Some college dorms allow small microwaves and refrigerators, and some do not. But in addition to the dorm’s checklist, you’ll likely want to add items that can be shared between the roommates like a small toolkit, a first-aid kit, a small vacuum, a room rug, and any small appliances that are allowed and needed.

Some of these items can be purchased at a local big box store once you get there, so they would not need to be packed for a long drive. You can also purchase toiletries and snacks once you arrive. Have the students coordinate ahead of time and decide who will be providing which shared items.

Add a mattress topper to your list, as well as familiar bedding. They’ll only need to bring about three week worth of clothes with them, as well as proper outerwear for the college area’s climate, and one nice dress-up outfit. Keeping your student’s transition as stress-free as possible means making them as comfortable as possible in their new room and letting them guide the decisions.
