How to connect with your neighborhood when you’ve just moved in? Learning the ins and outs of a new place can feel daunting, but fall is an excellent time to get out and explore.
Start close to home.Just being outside in your front yard in the fall, when the weather has turned pleasant, can be an easy way to meet new people (and their dogs). And what better way to connect with your new neighborhood than to meet the people who live there. Sit on your front porch for coffee in the morning. Rake some leaves. Trim some hedges. Mow the lawn. And while you’re getting things done, you’ll be meeting new neighborhood friends as they walk by. You might even meet someone you can invite for coffee!
Take walksat the end of the day around your area. The end of the day is when you’ll see people playing outside with their kids after school or work. Take a moment to say hello and introduce yourself as new to the neighborhood. This time of year, be sure and ask about the Halloween candy situation in your new neighborhood, so you’re prepared.
Enjoy neighborhood events! Find out from social media or others about events in the neighborhood: fall fests at the local elementary school, local high school football games, church garage sales, or fall fund-raisers like bike rides or barbeques. Then, show up! Get involved in your new neighborhood, and you’ll feel even more at home.
