Care and maintenance of your concrete can keep your solid surfaces outside in tip-top shape for years to come. Concrete surfaces like driveways, patios, sidewalks, and garage floors are built to last, but they still need a little TLC to stay looking their best and functioning well over time.
1. Clean It Regularly
Sweep off dirt, leaves, and debris often to prevent staining on a regular basis. For a deeper clean once or twice a year, use a hose or pressure washer with a mild detergent to lift grime without damaging the surface.
2. Seal It Up
Concrete is porous and can absorb moisture, oil, and chemicals. Apply a concrete sealer every 2 to 3 years to protect against cracking, water damage, and stains, especially in areas with harsh weather or freeze/thaw cycles.
3. Treat Stains Promptly
Oil, grease, rust, and leaf stains can set quickly. Don’t let those sit! Use a concrete-safe degreaser or cleaner to lift spots as soon as you notice them.
4. Avoid Harsh Chemicals
Steer clear of de-icing salts or acidic cleaners, which can eat away at your concrete. Sand is a better alternative in icy weather.
5. Watch for Cracks
Small cracks are common over time in concrete. Fill them with concrete caulk or filler to prevent them from growing larger or letting water seep underneath.
6. Protect the Edges
Keep heavy vehicles off the edges of driveways or slabs where the concrete is more vulnerable to breaking or chipping.
